What can I do to stay calm during winter/ flu season

Angel H 发布

Every year when flu season comes, I get that same feeling — a bit worried, but also thinking, “Okay lah, we just handle it one step at a time.” As a mum, all I want is for the kids to stay safe, comfortable, and well taken care of. I can't say essential oils can cure anything, of course, but at least they’ve become one of those small comforts that make the home feel calmer and more supported.

Over the years, I’ve found simple ways to use them. Nothing fancy, nothing that adds more stress — just little habits that help the house feel fresh and help everyone breathe a bit easier.

Here’s what I do during the colder months.

Morning:

Morning time is always chaos — my daughter cant wake up/can’t find her socks/being super slow like a snail. Before the madness starts, I switch on the diffuser with a few drops of eucalyptus, lemon, or peppermint. I think it can calm me a little bit also to help waking her up also making the house feel bright and clean.

Shower:

If someone wakes up stuffy or tired, I put one drop of eucalyptus on the shower floor (far from the water), or add a bit of peppermint or rose to the bath. The warm steam carries the scent, and honestly, it feels like a mini spa moment. Very simple, but it’s like giving your senses a warm hug.

Around the Home:

During flu season, the house can feel heavy — blankets everywhere, tissues here and there, windows closed because it’s cold. So I use essential oils to bring back some freshness.

  • A quick lemon or tea tree spray on the bedding

  • A few drops in the diffuser while we tidy

  • A gentle scent in the kids’ rooms before bed

Even on messy days, it makes the home feel cared for. And of course, once everyone recovers, I do a big wash and change all the sheets. Must clear out the “sick smell,” you know.

Bedtime:

Evenings are when everyone slows down, and feelings come out — especially when someone isn’t well. That’s when I switch to calming oils like lavender or frankincense. The soft scent helps the kids settle, and bedtime becomes peaceful instead of a wrestling match. Amazing how a gentle smell can change the whole mood.

And for myself, I keep a small personal inhaler in my bag with lemon and peppermint. When I’m out and feeling tired or overwhelmed, one deep breath helps me reset. Just a small thing, but it keeps me going.
