Do these beads with many holes really work?

由 Angel H 在 发布

When I first started using essential oils, I wondered if there were other ways to enjoy them besides diluting them with carrier oils and applying them to my skin. The first thing that came to mind was an electronic diffuser. But then I thought, what if I want to take the scent with me when I go out? I didn't want to keep applying oil to my skin all day. I just wanted something simple, like a natural mini perfume that I could wear wherever I want.

So I started searching online and discovered some beautiful chunky bracelets made with large beads called lava beads. They came in different shapes such as round, heart and star. The description said that the beads could absorb essential oils. All I needed to do was place one or two drops of oil on the beads before wearing them.

I was immediately fascinated. The first words that came into my mind were natural, earthy, raw and grounded. There was something very simple and beautiful about them. Before long, I bought my very first piece of diffuser jewellery.

After receiving my bracelet, I became curious and started researching lava beads.

I learned that these lava beads have a unique porous surface filled with tiny natural holes that come in many sizes, shapes and colours. They can be left in their natural black or dark grey colour, or dyed into brighter shades. They are lightweight, comfortable to wear and can be excellent for absorbing essential oils making them quite popular in handmade jewellery designs.

So what are they made from and where do they come from?

Lava beads are made from volcanic rock, usually basalt. When hot lava cools, gas bubbles escape and leave thousands of tiny holes in the stone. These natural pores make lava beads lightweight and able to absorb essential oils.

To make the beads, lava stone is mined from old volcanic deposits, cut into smaller pieces, shaped into beads, drilled, cleaned, and sometimes dyed. They are then polished or left matte before being sorted and packaged. Today, many lava beads are manufactured and wholesaled from Yiwu, China, one of the world's largest bead trading centres.

And spiritually?

Many people are also drawn to lava stone for its spiritual meaning. Because it comes from deep within the Earth, it is often associated with grounding, balance and stability. Some people use it to help manage stress and release negative energy, although these beliefs are based on personal and spiritual traditions rather than scientific evidence.

For me, sourcing genuine natural lava beads is very important. I usually look at product photos, read customer reviews, and order samples before making a final decision. Over time, I have learned a few simple ways to tell the difference between real lava stone and imitations.

  • Weight: Real lava stone is surprisingly light for its size. Imitations may be too heavy (ceramic) or too light (plastic).
  • Surface: Real lava beads have natural pores and unique patterns. Fake ones often look too uniform or repetitive.
  • Colour: Natural lava stone usually has slight colour variations, while imitations can appear perfectly uniform or unnaturally bright.
  • Absorption: Real lava stone absorbs water and essential oils. Imitations often repel liquids, leaving them on the surface.
  • Temperature: Real lava stone feels cool when first touched. Plastic beads usually feel warm almost immediately.

Care and Use

Because lava beads are natural and porous, they need a little extra care. To clean them, rinse with lukewarm water, gently brush with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, then let them air dry. Avoid direct sunlight and heaters, as sudden temperature changes may cause small cracks over time.

One of the best things about lava stone is that it absorbs essential oils. Just add 1-2 drops to a bead and let it soak in for about 10 minutes before wearing. The scent can last for several hours. For best results, use pure essential oils, as synthetic fragrances may stain the stone or leave residue behind.

Final Thoughts

I hope others feel the same excitement that I felt when I first discovered these little beads filled with tiny natural holes. They may look simple, but they carry a unique connection to nature and the Earth. If you have never tried lava beads before, add a drop or two of your favourite essential oil and wear them for a day. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy the experience, and perhaps notice a little difference in how you feel along the way. ❤️
